Resumen

The vast majority of human games offer leisure and entertainment to their participants. Nowadays, digital games have surpassed their original purpose of mere entertainment and have diverse applications, especially educational. In all cases, the games offer a learning experience to the participants, who need to get used to it and understand how it works. In this sense, games gain prominence in discussions about teaching facilitation tools and how they can actually promote learning. The study of self-determined learning, also known as Heutagogy, focuses on the idea that the learner is the protagonist of their educational journey, playing an active and deliberate role in formulating their learning strategies. This autonomy is also seen in the digital gaming environment, which offers the player an experience that can be compared to the characteristic elements of heutagogical learning. To better understand the relationship between games and Heutagogy, the qualitative research method was used in this work through the review of emerging literature and the investigation of the component stages of the Potion Craft digital game, allowing the identification and understanding of the engagement elements present in the dynamics of the game. The results showed significant convergences between the game analyzed and self-determined learning. It is concluded from these that digital games represent an important engagement and learning tool for new generations. In this way, a better understanding of game design can contribute to deepening knowledge about the heutagogical learning environment and the use of games in educational training.
